Fɘign centers on a 17-year-old Masha Cermak and her older sister Catherine.
Throughout Masha's life, Catherine ensured that Masha suffered as much as possible both physically and emotionally. Catherine felt the need to inflict suffering on her as a form of payback, she felt this way out of misguided anger and jealousy
Masha was a closeted lesbian who was in a secret relationship with another girl named
Vicky. Shortly after their relationship was established, words started to circulate throughout her social circle, school which eventually got to her sister. Masha experienced rampant homophobia as a result which was exacerbated by Catherine. To add insult to injury, Catherine spread rumors to further shame her.
With a tarnished reputation, worsened Masha's depression, and growing addiction to oxycodone

One afternoon, Dill was greeted by Masha at his doorstep holding a box of journals. When asked what the journals were for, she did not elaborate, only saying the truth was in them. She left in a hurry saying that she did not have much time.

High on what she had left of her supply, retrieved a shotgun, shooting her sister and ultimately bringing her 17 years of suffering to and end with a shot in the head. Leaving behind a note along with brain matter.

Aftermath

The shooting gained attention among the local media along with what others had to say about the attempted murderer. The reason for all the attention was what the victim claimed about the events leading to it all. Catherine made statements about her dead sister during and after recovering from her injuries.
With the claims by others and the media coverage, Masha, even in death, continued to be the subject of vitriol those who knew her and those who did not. Dill often justified Masha's actions as a reaction from years of repeated physical and psychological abuse, despite having damning claims and evidence against Catherine, he was ignored and criticized.

In Autumn of 2006, Quinn, a woman who became interested in Masha upon details about her life were released. Quinn grew curious about the details that were recalled by Catherine after being interviewed, feeling that some things didn't quite add up. Quinn figured that the only way to know what really happened was from the source.
Going to the teenager's grave and retrieving her corpse, took her in for experimentation. Several weeks of experimentation led to Quinn's successful attempt to revive the dead. Quinn bombarded Masha with questions only for her to not remember enough for a solid recollection.
